Vincenzo Maria Coronelli; 1650 - 1718.

A franciscan priest in Venice, Coronelli became eventually the father general of his order in 1699.
By that time, he was a famous mathematician, a respected cartographer and a noted globe maker (he is known to have built one large 15' terrestrial globe for Louis XIV of France).
He was also a geography teacher at the University, the founder of the "Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti", and the official Cosmographer of the Venetian Republic.
From his very large output, note the 1690 "Atalante Veneto" or venitian atlas, the 1693 "Libro dei globi", and the 1696 "Isolario dell'Atalante Veneto".

Quantung, e Fokien, ..

This large map (23 7/8" X 17 15/16") was initially included in the 1692 "Corso geografico universale". The present item was printed for the 1696 "Isolario".
It shows the chinese land provinces of Guangdong and Fujian, the two main chinese island provinces of Hainan and Taiwan, the Pescadores archipelago and the northern part of Luzon (northernmost island of the Philippines).
Notice the deep knowledge of the Jesuits who had supplied the data on the topology, and on the administrative organization of the provinces, their cities and other settlements, and the actives missions therein.
Note that Luzon is depicted much too much to the west (it should be directly south of Taiwan). An artistic license to keep the cartouche at a traditional location in the bottom right corner of the map?
Also note that several names are given for Taiwan: Bella, Formosa, Laqueio and Ta Lieukieu (phonetic mandarin for Greater Ryukyu or Lequeo Grande, or .Okinawa!?).
Fantastic sail boats and galleys populate the South China sea.
Italian text on verso.
